Scientific research at the department (block "Pathological physiology") was carried out in two directions. The first of them is the fundamental study of the mechanisms of diabetogenesis and the associated mechanisms of regulation of insulinogenesis, their disorders and the pathogenesis of hypothalamic obesity. Engaged in the study of diabetes mellitus, Prof. Ya.A. Lazaris with Prof. IA Serebrovskaya and co-workers for the first time in the Soviet Union received alloxane and ditizone diabetes. In the laboratory of the department, 8 new "chemical" models of diabetes have been created, the study of which brings us closer to understanding some of the molecular mechanisms of insulin deficiency. The second direction was to study the pathogenesis of acute pulmonary edema and disorders of the important membrane structure of the lungs – their surfactant system.

The staff of the department has published over 3000 scientific articles in domestic and foreign journals, sections in the multi-volume manual of pathological physiology, articles in the Large Medical Encyclopedia, 11 monographs have been published. 11 doctoral and 38 candidate dissertations were defended.
