Trip to Dolinka

27 April 2022

On April 21, a group of 1023 specialists of "General Medicine" traveled to the Museum of Political Repressions in the village of Dolinka of the Karaganda region, where the center of the totalitarian regime of Karlag was located. The management of our university kindly provided us transportation support - a passenger "Gazelle" for this trip.

Students who have recently studied the Soviet period in the framework of the discipline "Modern History of Kazakhstan" can see the exhibits of the epoch of 30 50s of the last century and they also can listen an interesting story about the conditions of the founding of the museum. Students also can see the installations of the museum in which re-created such camp "attributes" as a cell, NKVD investigator's office, prison isolator, etc. Interesting information on the availability of medicine in Karlag was found: treatment was provided by doctors and paramedics into the repressed persons, even the operation was carried out.

Due to poor nutrition and difficult conditions among the prisoners, an epidemic has occasionally erupted: the sick have been sent to solitary confinement, which often represented as like a barn, skidding off the board. Ignorance of all the inhumanity of the totalitarian regime, which struck innocent citizens of the country - the USSR, including the number of Kazakhs deprived of their liberty for a long period of time, included a small contribution to the economy and agriculture. Thus, new varieties of agricultural crops were grown in the Karlaga system, records were set for the growth of cattle, labor was used in the construction of industrial facilities: mines, roads, in construction. The tour guide answered the students' questions. On the territory of the Museum we also saw the monuments to the figures of the Soviet era: F. Dzerzhinsky, VI Lenin, the symbol of the Soviet epoch - the monument "Sickle and Hammer" and did not allow the opportunity to be photographed on their background.

On the way back, we visited another monument the graves of Karaganda miners, who died in 2008 during a major accident at the mine "Abai". 30 people of different nationalities, representatives of masculine and dangerous professions have always remained under the ground. On the surface directly above this place was a monument made of black marble, on which we were able to see photos of dead miners, almost silently remembering them.

In the words of students, the trip brought us all the new knowledge about the past of Independent Kazakhstan.
