Practical course in Germany

Practical course in Germany

30 March 2015

This practical course was in ophthalmology department of Klinikum Frankfurt (Oder), Germany, under the direction of doctor of medicine Аntje Just.

Klinikum Frankfurt (Oder) was founded in 1971, in Frankfurt on Oder located on the border with Poland. There are more than 30 departments of different directions: therapeutic (oncology/haematology, transplantation of steam sells, gastroenterology, pulmonology, nephrology, cardiology, radiotherapy), surgical (general surgery, torathic surgery, traumatology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, otolaryngology), obstetric-gynaecological separations (gynaecology, maternity), psychiatric departments for adults and children, diagnostic units (radiology, endoscopy, functional diagnostics), laboratory. Besides hospital care, also outpatient care is rendered in this clinic.

The first week in the clinic I spent conducted in the admission department of "Ophthalmology", participated in examination of patients, independently conducted a lot of researches such as refractometry, tonometry, biomicroscopy, ophthalmoscopy and also optical coherent tomography. I also participated in realization of angiography of retina and laser treatment.  Directly in patient department I participated in the rounds of patients and pre-post-operative examination.

Subsequent two weeks I was in surgery block, assisted and independently executed the separate stages of operations, such as a phakoemulsification of cataract with implantation of IOL, vitreoretinal interference, correction of cross-eye (heterotrophy and strabismus), blepharoplastic surgery (ectropion, chalasion, excision of the tumor on a lower and upper eyelids etc.)

The atmosphere in the clinic is very pleasant, all doctors are benevolent, responsive and speak English-well, therefore there were no problems both in intermingling with doctors and in all process of education.

Completed course was very fruitful. It gave an opportunity to improve professional and communicative skills, get new knowledge and perfect practical skills. And also for my master's degree work it was useful to compare methodologies of treatment of some diseases, conduct the comparative analysis of results of our treatment and German colleagues.

I thank our foreign colleagues for the given possibility and I think that participation in work of department and experience exchange with foreign colleagues is the important side of development of specialist of any profile. Also I express enormous gratitude to professor of qmu Dr. Ulrich Bitz for organization of this practical course, help with visa and trip to Germany. In the future I hope for joint work of our University with Klinikum Frankfurt (Oder), Germany.
