November 17 – World Prematurity Day

November 17 – World Prematurity Day

20 November 2023

It was introduced in 2008 by the European Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants (EFCNI) to raise awareness about preterm birth and the pressing issues that doctors and families of premature babies face. After all, having a baby prematurely is a serious challenge for parents who need not only qualified medical attention but also psychological support. This day has been honored in our country since 2013, and events are currently held in over a hundred countries around the world as part of World Prematurity Day.

Since 2008, all newborn children born at the gestation period of 22 weeks (with a body weight at the time of birth of 500 grams or more) are considered Kazakhstan citizens and receive a full range of guaranteed medical care, according to international standards.

All favorable conditions have now been developed in Kazakhstan for nursing premature babies weighing up to 1000 grams. Recent studies have demonstrated the favorable dynamics in child treatment with the presence of the mother in child care. After receiving training from medical staff, mothers can feed their newborns on their own, change positions, handle, and change diapers. This allows a connection to form fast between mother and child, which is favorable to the treatment's outcome. After acquiring abilities in the hospital, the mother can care for her baby on her own after discharge – premature babies require specific care. Doctors and parents work together because both parties have the same aim.

Resident neonatologists from the NCJSC “KMU” Department of Pediatrics and Neonatology, along with clinical instructors, actively participated in the organization and conduct of World Prematurity Day in Karaganda (Regional Clinical Hospital Perinatal Center No.1,2, Regional Obstetric and Gynecological Center of Balkhash, Temirtau), and Ulytau (Zhezqazghan) regions. Young patients and their parents were invited to the centers to share their accomplishments and successes, mastered skills and knowledge, and to help parents who had recently given birth to premature babies.

On this World Prematurity Day, we congratulate newborns and parents, neonatologists and medical staff! We wish you good health, happiness, and prosperity!
