Meeting with the Head of the Anti-Corruption Department for the Karaganda region

21 September 2023

On September 19, the Karaganda Medical University hosted a meeting between Sergey Perov, the head of the Department of the Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Anti-Corruption Service) for the Karaganda region, and the University’s management and students.

Opening the meeting, the Rector of the University Anar Akylbekovna noted the importance of forming an anti-corruption culture, minimizing and eliminating corruption risks, ensuring a respectable academic environment as one of the priorities of the strategic development of the University:

- “Our University systematically carries out work on preventing and combating corruption. The work is based on the Anti-Corruption Action Plan and the implementation of projects of the SBD No. 4 “Prevention and Fight against Corruption”. The University does a lot of work to promote and implement the basic principles of academic integrity. Since 2018, Karaganda Medical University has been a member of the League of Academic Integrity. The University guarantees the conscientious implementation of the mission of the League of Academic Integrity to improve the quality of education in the country by promoting and implementing the ten fundamental principles of academic integrity”.

In turn, Sergey Nikolayevich, in his welcoming speech, shared important aspects of the ongoing joint work with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education on the formation of academic integrity and anti-corruption thinking in the student environment. Moreover, the distinguished guest revealed the main directions of the “Anti-Corruption volunteering” project, which was launched a month ago and has already gathered 30 partial activists.

Arslan Myngishev, Deputy Head of the Prevention Department, spoke about the main directions of the country's anti-corruption policy and the implementation of anti-corruption projects at the republican and regional levels:

- “Taking into account the law enforcement practice and experience of the OECD countries, a new law “On Combating Corruption” was adopted in 2015. For the first time, it reflected such preventive tools as the corruption risk analysis, anti-corruption monitoring, anti-corruption culture formation, etc. They make it possible to effectively identify "pain points" and eliminate problems in various areas at an early stage.

As far as the formation of a culture of integrity is concerned, great emphasis is placed to anti-corruption education from school age. In this regard, under the coordination of the Agency, the republican action "Hour of Integrity" is held, aimed at promoting the ideology of honesty, justice and trust among students", the spokesman noted.

At the end of the meeting, the participants were able to ask their questions related to anti-corruption volunteering, prevention of domestic corruption and the specific participation of students in anti-corruption work. The visit continued with a tour of the university, during which the guests were able to get acquainted with the activities of the Student Service Center, the research laboratory and the library.
