Conference on Nursing Excellence

27 November 2023

The final international conference “The Trinity of Nursing: Clinical Practice, Research, and Education” was held on November 9-10, 2023 at Astana Medical University, and was dedicated to the project “Nursing Excellence at Master's and PhD doctoral level in Kazakhstan's higher education system – AccelEd” (ERASMUS+).

The AccelEd project coordinator from Karaganda Medical University, Bauyrzhan Omarkulov, gave a presentation on “Evidence-based Nursing through Collaboration” in the plenary section, along with Johanna Heikkilä (Senior Adviser, Associate Professor, School of Health and Welfare, JAMK University of Applied Sciences, Finland). The report covers the results of work package WP 2.3, with teams from JAMK University of Applied Sciences and Karaganda Medical University, for the years 2021-2023.

The goal of WP 2.3 was to improve evidence-based nursing by establishing sustainable structures and systematic processes of collaboration in nursing research between medical universities and health facilities.

Teams from the JAMK University of Applied Sciences and Karaganda Medical University carried out the following activities: 5 online meetings with the participation of representatives of academic and practical communities with the attendance of 120 people; trainings on the topic: “JBI Comprehensive Systematic Review” with the participation of 31 people, training on service design with the participation of 150 people. The following reports were made: “Report on recommendations on the development of structures and processes of cooperation between universities and medical facilities”, “Report on experience and recommendations on service design and facilitation methods in the development of nursing services in Kazakhstan”, “Report: Constant practice of cooperation in the area of nursing research in Kazakhstan”. Project activities were carried out in collaboration between European universities, Abo Academi University and University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU) and coordinated by Lithuanian University of Medical Sciences (LUMN).

One of the results of WP 2.3 is the opening of the JBI Collaboration Center at the NCJSC “KMU” in collaboration with the Adelaide Institute, Australia. The opening of this Center will provide an opportunity to enter the largest global collaboration to integrate evidence-based medicine into a theoretically grounded model integrating academic institutions with hospitals and healthcare systems. The Center will ensure the sustainability of the project and the development of cooperation between practical health are and medical universities.

Also important for the development of nursing in Kazakhstan is the creation of the National Nursing Repository within the AccelEd project.

The international conference participants then resumed their work in the sections. Bauyrzhan Omarkulov, Director of the Institute of Public Health and Professional Health, NCJSC "Karaganda Medical University," and Johanna Heikkilä, Senior Adviser, Associate Professor of the School of Health and Welfare, JAMK University of Applied Sciences, Finland, facilitated Section 2: Evidence-based Nursing Practice. In the section reports were made by the KMU team Zhuldyz Kuanysh and Feruza Sadueva, teacher of the School of Nursing Education with the report: “Permanent Practices in Nursing Research Collaboration in Kazakhstan”. Also Feruza Sadueva and Paolo Colet, Associate Professor at Nazarbayev University School of Medicine, Kazakhstan presented their report on “Context Assessment and Readiness to Change: A Case Story of National Research Oncology Center on Implementing Best Practice in Post-Surgical Pain Management”.

The following lectures were given on the second day of the conference: “JBI Evidence Implementation” (Paolo Colet (NU), Feruza Sadueva (KMU)); “Embracing open science: revolutionizing research and its implications for nursing” (Jonas Cruz, Professor, SNMU), "Master thesis and PhD assessment criteria: A Scooping review" (Joseph Almazan, SNMU), "Successful achievement of the project results through the quality assurance" (Liisa Tolonen, Specialist, JAMK University of Applied Sciences, Finland).
