If we don’t know our past, we can’t shape the future

If we don’t know our past, we can’t shape the future

19 December 2023

On December 13, 2023, students from General Medical Practice of 5-027 and 5-034 groups, along with teacher S.E. Khalmuradova, visited the Karlag Museum as part of their educational activity.

Karlag is one of the Gulag's major forced labor camps, located in the Karaganda region. Karlag was formed on December 19, 1931, the center of the camp was located in the village of Dolinka, 45 kilometers from Karaganda.

The guide explained that the museum staff's goal is to preserve and convey to us what they have managed to collect and preserve over many years of efforts by researchers, journalists, former prisoners - those convicted of Article 58 of the RSFSR Criminal Code "enemies of the people", their children and grandchildren, for those who are not indifferent to the past. And, indeed, what we witnessed there will be remembered by the students for the rest of their lives.

Therefore, a visit to the museum is essential for the development and comprehension of our society's history throughout the formation of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Even ancient people said that if we don't know our past, we can't build a decent future.
